Richard Thompson

Wed 23rd Apr 7:00pm – 10:30pm

St Leonard’s Church, Saint Leonard’s Close, Bridgnorth WV16 4EJ, UK

A close up picture of Richard Thompson holding a guitar infron of his face.

Richard Thompson’s musical influence cannot be overstated. Having co-founded the groundbreaking group Fairport Convention as a teenager in the ‘60s, he and his bandmates invented the distinctive strain of British Folk Rock. He left the group by the age of 21 which was followed by a decade long musical partnership with his thenwife Linda, to over 30 years as a highly successful solo artist.

In 2011, Thompson received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) personally bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. The Los Angeles Times called him “the finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix” and Rolling Stone has named him one of the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time. He has received lifetime achievement awards for songwriting from the BBC Radio 2 Awards, the Americana Music Association, and was awarded the prestigious Ivor Novello Award. His song “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” was named one of TIME Magazine’s “100 Greatest Songs Since 1923.” A wide range of musicians have recorded Thompson’s songs including Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, R.E.M., Sleater-Kinney, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Jones, David Byrne, Don

Henley, Los Lobos, and many more. His massive body of work includes many Grammy nominated albums as well as numerous soundtracks, including Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man and 2019’s The Cold Blue.

His genre defying mastery of both acoustic and electric guitar along with engaging energy and onstage wit continue to earn him new fans and a place as one of the most distinctive virtuosos and writers in Folk Rock history. In May 2024 Richard Thompson released to critical acclaim, Ship To Shore, his first studio album in six years.

Richard will be supported with an opening set from up and coming artists George Boomsma, “Skilled guitarist, distinctive songwriter & a fine singer” – Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2

This is an intimate show for Richard Thompson who can usually be found selling out the Symphony Hall in Birmingham, so a wonderful opportunity to see him perform in a smaller and beautiful venue.

“Skilled guitarist, distinctive songwriter & a fine singer” – Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2

George Boomsma is singer songwriter from Northallerton, North Yorkshire. Having been honing his song-writing craft and live performances over the past decade, George has been quietly gaining some well-earnt attention and acclaim. His pure voice and tumbling guitar make for a bewitching combination, with a maturity and poetic lyricism that have left audiences around the country entranced. His songs reflect on themes from navigating relationships, family, self-acceptance, grief, finding a path forward despite uncertainties, and the weather (mostly rain).

George’s album, The Promise of Spring was released in 2023 with radio plays on BBC 6 Music & The Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2 as well as many others and we are thrilled to have George touring the Shires as part of the Spring 2025 season.

Emma and Ellika

Thu 20th Mar 8:00pm – 10:00pm

Emma and Ellika Photo Credit Duncan Strouts

Deeply rooted in the old fiddle tradition, Emma & Ellika play tunes and improvised second voices with power and variety. New compositions by both Emma and Ellika stand side by side with traditional material from Bingsjö and Orsa in the county of Dalarna. Fiddles and re-tuned violas; voices with strongly personal expressions. Blue notes, gravity, lift, improvisation and dance are present in this world where the heritage from master musicians such as Nils Agenmark, Gössa Anders Andersson, Solo Cissokho and K. Shivakumar form a red thread in the rich experiences of both musicians. A story informed not only by Swedish fiddle music but also by music from other cultures and genres.

The meeting between Emma Reid and Ellika Frisell began in 2000, first in a teacher-student relationship at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and then as a collaboration between two musicians with a shared background and source of inspiration. Two generations where the creative expression is seamlessly welded together. Over the years Emma & Ellika have performed at numerous concert and dance stages in Sweden and the UK.

Showcasing their debut album VÄDER (weather) don’t miss the chance to see them live!
